The opening of the Dan Devine
Pavilion in 1998 marked a very important milestone in Missouri football
history. For the first time, the team could stick to the same practice
schedule no matter the weather.
Before 1998, the team was
forced to use the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse during bad weather and poor
practice field conditions. But the fieldhouse was at times
impractical as the team couldn't hold full contact practices. Plus,
the track, gymnastics, baseball, and softball teams could all be using the
building at the same time, creating a very crowded situation.
When the Hearnes Center
Fieldhouse wasn't available, the football team had been known to use the
Hearnes Center Arena and even old Rothwell Gymnasium to get some work done.
In 1997, the Tigers used the artificial turf at Stankiowski Field for a few
practices when the regular practice fields were too wet for use.
Before the Hearnes Center
opened in 1972, the Tigers routinely used Brewer Fieldhouse for practices.
The dirt floor on the west side of the basketball court had ample space to
hold workouts.
The Devine Pavilion
originally was planned to be built on the south side of the Hearnes Center
and was to have a full-sized football field. But in order to have the
building closer to the football complex, the pavilion site was moved to a
steep hill immediately south of the Tom Taylor Complex on Providence Rd.
When completed in July 1998,
the Dan Devine Pavilion featured an 80 yard football field, four batting
cages for the baseball and softball teams, storage rooms, and restroom
facilities.
While normally used as a
practice facility for Missouri outdoor sports teams, the pavilion has played
host to Missouri softball games. The team normally uses it early
in the season when it's too cold to play at University Field.
In July, the original
artificial turf field will be removed and replaced with FieldTurf, the same
surface currently used on Faurot Field.
