Missouri
quarterback Chase Daniel has been named one of four finalists for the 2007
Heisman Trophy. He will join Hawaii’s Colt Brennan, Arkansas’ Darren
McFadden, and Florida’s Tim Tebow in New York on Saturday.
Daniel has
thrown for a Missouri single season record 4,170 yards and 33 touchdowns this
season. He also helped guide Missouri to an 11-2 record and the school’s first
trip to the Big 12 championship game.
Hawaii might
not receive a lot of national attention with games starting about the time
many people are going to sleep on the east coast, but the Warriors’
quarterback has put his team on the map on the main land. Brennan set the
NCAA career record for touchdowns thrown, while leading Hawaii to an
undefeated record and its first Sugar Bowl appearance. His 4,174 passing
yards are fourth best in the Football Bowl Subdivision, while his 38 passing
touchdowns rank third in the nation.
Just one year
ago, McFadden was runner-up to Ohio State’s Troy Smith for the Heisman, but he
might have an even tougher time hearing his name called this time. McFadden
has rushed for 1,725 yards and has scored 15 touchdowns, although he has had
three games where he rushed for 88 yards or less.
Perhaps no
other sophomore quarterback has done more for his team than Tebow. While the
Gators have lost three games, Tebow has been outstanding in the air and on the
ground. He has passed for 3,132 yards, rushed for 838 yards, and has 51 total
touchdowns. Tebow would become the first sophomore to win the Heisman.
Daniel,
meanwhile,
becomes the second Missouri quarterback to be a Heisman contender. Paul
Christman finished third in 1939 and fifth in 1940. Also, end Danny
LaRose finished eighth in 1960.
The 2007
Heisman Trophy will be awarded Saturday night inside the Grand Ballroom of the
Hilton New York. The presentation will be shown on ESPN starting at 7 PM
CST.
